Biggarsberg is new battleground
DUNDEE – All eyes in the cycling community in the province will be focused on the far reaches of Northern KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, when the Biggarsberg Cycle Challenge gives riders two chances for series points as they take in the scenic ride through the KZN Battlefields.
The Biggarsberg Cycle Challenge, organised by Dundee Tourism, is the second race in the new Hills & Waves Road Cycling Series presented by MD24, while junior riders will be able to take the first pedal strokes toward qualifying for the final of the KZN Cycling Schools Road Series presented by aQuellé.
Both series culminate in finals at the aQuellé Tour Durban, where the top Hills and Waves riders will be eligible for the prestigious invitational race and all entrants at the Durban event that have participated in the series are included in the lucky draw for big monetary prizes.
Each event in the schools series is a qualification race for the KZN Cycling Schools Road Series Final which will be held as part of the aQuellé Tour Durban.
The Biggarsberg event offers two distances, both starting and finishing at the Talana Museum in Dundee. For the fitter and more experienced riders, a 100km circular route offers some testing hills that will reward the fitter and stronger riders over the second half. The 35km is significantly easier and will be a perfect ride for the younger, less experienced and those riders still recovering from their winter hibernation.
Following on from the opening event of the Hills and Waves Road Cycling Series presented by MD24 at last month’s Brink Karkloof Road Classic, Warren Moolman and Frances Janse van Rensburg hold the series leaders’ jerseys. Moolman was a clear winner in the men’s race at Karkloof with Kevin Benkenstein and David Shelley rounding out the top three, while Janse van Rensburg edged out Silke Bester, with Frann Scott completing the podium.
